Adoption FAQ

I'm looking for a purebred cat. Who can help me find one?
We receive purebred cats and kittens at the Sundance Ranch. There is no guarantee we will have a purebred at any given time. Call us at (505) 985-0089 to check.

I would like to adopt a young kitten, How young a kitten can I adopt?
We only adopt out kittens that have been weaned from their mothers. Kittens under eight weeks of age cannot be adopted.

Do I have to come all the way to Clovis, New Mexico to adopt a cat from your organization?
Yes, eventually. However we also provide opportunities for people to adopt cats through many off site adoption venues.

How much does it cost to adopt a cat and what is included in the adoption?
The fee is $40 per cat or $50 per kitten. The adoption fee includes age-appropriate vaccinations (which include Rabies, Feline Rhinotracheitis, Caleci and Pan-Leukopenia), deworming treatment, FIV/FeLV testing, and age appropriate spay/neuter surgery. A supply of the cats food is also included. A cardboard cat carrier is available for an additional $5.00 fee.

What forms of payment will you accept?
We accept cash, checks, or money-orders.

Why can't I come see the cats right away?
Cats and kittens that are adopted on an immediate basis are 85% more likely to be returned to the sanctuary. We use the adoption process to slow down the potential adopters enthusiasm. This allows the adopter to think about the responsibility of adopting a new family member. The adoption process we have developed has resulted in less than 1% of the cats we adopt coming back to the sanctuary.

What about cat allergies?
Approximately 1 in every 7 humans are allergic to a cat skin. Symptoms range from a mild sneeze to severe headaches. If you have not had a cat within the past 10 years, see your doctor about testing for cat dander allergies before you adopt.

Can you hold a cat for me?
We do not hold cats or take payment over the phone to reserve cats. We adopt strictly on a first come, first serve basis.

Why won't you hold a cat for me?
The Sundance Ranch has decided not to put cats on hold based on past experience. An overwhelming number of the cats that were put on hold by potential adopters were never adopted.

Can I decide not to have my cat spayed or neutered?
No. Any animal that is released from the Sundance Ranch must be spayed or neutered under New Mexico law.
